Have you made a promise to yourself be more active? Lots of us join a gym and plan to get fit, but after a few months we lose interest. There is another way. You don’t need to spend a fortune on gym memberships – you can get fit and have fun by doing loads of free outdoor activities across the county.

We’ve pulled together a series of blogs on the best ways to get fit for free. So if you’re up for getting more active, read on, and why not take a look at the whole series of blogs. This time we’re looking at outdoor gyms – free and accessible workout equipment that you can find in parks rights across Kent and Medway.

Outdoor gyms are a brilliant way to tone up, get fit and work out without the price tag of an indoor gym. In an outdoor gym, you can expect to find all the equipment you will find in a regular gym and it’ll be easier to use too. Outdoor gym equipment can even be used by children and older people. Often located in parks, you can enjoy the fresh air and incorporate a workout into your daily routine. They are a perfect complement to a kickabout in the park with your mates, a run or even taking the kids to the park. Whether you’re new to exercise or want to quit the expensive gym fees without compromising on your fitness, an outdoor gym is a great place to start.

Outdoor gyms are located all over Kent; find your nearest one here. Expect to find arm and pedal bikes, push-up, dip and cross stations, plus loads more pieces of kit to aid your workout. You don’t need training to use the equipment but if you have any doubts about your ability to use the equipment, seek advice before beginning to use it. Another great thing about an outdoor gym is that you’re not tied to opening hours. Simply come along at a time that suits you. Trade in those crowded gyms for the freedom and fresh air of an outdoor gym!

Getting Started

Aim to spend around 15-20 minutes, three to four times a week using an outdoor gym and include an upper body and lower body workout. The labels on the machines will tell you which part of the body you’ll be targeting. Don’t forget to warm up before you start to use the machines and finish with some stretching exercises to prevent achy muscles the next day.

Spend some time getting to know the equipment at your local outdoor gym. Once you’re more confident, you can start getting more creative by combining gym sessions with other workouts and inviting your friends along for brunch in the park afterwards.
