Structure of the sport

RunningAthletics in the UK is governed by UK Athletics and its respective home country governing body. Outlined below are the roles of UK Athletics and England Athletics:

UK Athletics

As the national governing body for athletics, UK Athletics oversees the development and management of the nation’s favourite Olympic sport, from grassroots right through to podium.

Since its inception in 1999, UK Athletics has developed to become the most successful and robust athletics governing body in the world.

Over the years it has matured to generate a clear vision for the sport – to drive up performance and raise standards in every event, every region and every age group.

With London set to host the Olympic Games in 2012, there has never been a more exciting time for UK Athletics, as all eyes will be on athletics and especially the British athletes competing on home soil.

Yet the purpose of UK Athletics does not end at preparing athletes for the world stage. Not only does it create mass appeal of a truly breathtaking spectator sport through televised events, UK athletics also plays a fundamental role in developing a ‘sport for all’ by encouraging participation no matter what your age, ability or background.

England Athletics

England Athletics is responsible for the governance of athletics in England.

Many of the services are now the remit of the nine Regions of England, acting with autonomy and thereby bringing these services closer to the clubs and their athletes.

The central functions and services provided by England Athletics are maintained by a small team of staff. These services and responsibilities include international track and field teams, maintenance and distribution of kit for all England internationals including those managed by the Special Associations, Commonwealth Games and related matters, Age Group Championships and Combined Events Championships both indoors and outdoors and financial and accounting services.

A key strength of the organisation is the bringing together of Regional Executive teams with the elected volunteer councils to increase capacity and improve performance at the grass-roots of Athletics. The elected regional chairs from each elected council come together to form the England Athletics Council, a body which evaluates the needs and requirements of the sport in formulating proposals for consideration and action by the Board of England Athletics Ltd.
