Bowls

What's it all about?

Bowls close upIndoor bowls is one of the most popular sports in the world. There are 354 indoor clubs in the UK alone. At least 338,000 people play bowls regularly every week.

The game is played on a carpeted area which is divided into rinks; this is surrounded by a shallow ditch. Players take it in turn to deliver their bowls from a mat at one end of the rink towards a small white ball in the ‘jack’ at the other end. The object of the game is to get one or more of your bowls nearer to the hack than your opponent; each bowl has a bias, which allows the bowl to curve. To be successful the bowl must be delivered with the correct weight, line and length.

World Indoor Bowls Council Championships are held every year with entries from all over the world. Bowls is also played in the Commonwealth Games. As yet, it is not an Olympic Sport.

Most clubs provide coaching before full membership if offered. Many clubs have open days to give prospective members a chance to try the game; some keep a rink free for non-members to use.
