Young people from Shepway benefit from joint delivery of Day Certificate course

During the February half-term seven youngsters from Shepway completed a Day Certificate in Sports Leadership course. The two half day sessions at the Chapel Building in New Romney were jointly delivered by Tori Pope (Youth Inclusion Support Panel) and Ralph Province (Youth Worker for Romney Marsh Christian Fellowship), the first time either have delivered the course.shepway_course

The youngsters who attended all took part in a variety of practical exercises including ice breakers, relay races, refereeing their own games and conducting their own health and safety check of the venue. Positive discussions took place on how to organise activities, encourage others who may be reluctant to get involved and what opportunities are available locally in terms of facilities, clubs and volunteering.

Tori and Ralph were particularly impressed with how seriously the youngsters took the training and for some they hope this course acts as a stepping stone to further opportunities in sports leadership.

Leadership and Coaching Development Officer, Stuart Butler, meanwhile had special praise for the tutors themselves after observing the second session; “It was excellent to see two new tutors delivering a relaxed and enjoyable course for the benefit of the youngsters. Hopefully Tori and Ralph can act as an inspiration to others who haven’t as yet managed to deliver. It can be daunting delivering a course you have no previous experience of but these two have shown it can be achieved”.

Elsewhere within Youth Offending Service, Ian Snowball, continues to roll out further Day Certificate courses at New House in Sittingbourne. In April another five youngsters from the ISSP passed the course and they will all be awarded their certificates in the coming weeks.
