Gynmastics / Trampolining - What's it all about?
Gymnastics is one of the largest participation
sports in Great Britain, with an estimated four million people taking
part on a regular basis in schools, leisure centres and clubs. Originating
in ancient civilisations and introduced as a modern Olympic discipline
in the nineteenth century, it is an ever growing and developing
sport.
The diversity of gymnastics, varying equipment and a mix of skills and competencies have created a sport that meets the needs of a wide range of participants of all ages and abilities.
Gymnastics encompasses the following disciplines and activities:
- Men’s Artistic Gymnastics
- Women’s Artistic Gymnastics
- Rhythmic Gymnastics
- Trampoline
- Acrobatics & Tumbling
- Aerobic Gymnastics
- General Gymnastics
- Team Gym
- Gymnastics and Movement for People with Disabilities
- Cheerleading
Structure of the sport
British Gymnastics (BG) is the overall Governing Body for the sport in the UK and is based at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre.
England Gymnastics Association is responsible for all aspects of the sport in England below world class performance and has 10 regional management committees. Kent comes under the South East Region.
Kent also has its own County association, Kent Gymnastics Association, which is responsible for the local strategic development of the sport. It also organises a number of competitions held within the county.
Taking part
There are many gymnastics and trampoline clubs in Kent. Many schools, sports centres and purpose built facilities will have sessions for complete beginners, most of which are run in the afternoon, evening or at weekends. Beginners usually train for up to one hour a week and, then if they wish, can gradually build up and perhaps join one of the development or competition squads. Most clubs will be happy for you to go along and watch a session before you decide to join, so find out if there is one in your area and contact them direct.
Clubs that are recognised as offering safe, effective and child-friendly facilities with fully qualified coaches are those that have achieved GymMark accreditation. This is the sign that the club has all the necessary procedures in place in relation to health and safety, child protection, management of the club and coaching.
