What's it all about?

HockeyHockey is an Olympic sport for both men and women. The game can be played outdoors (usually on an artificial astro-turf surface) as an 11 a-side game or indoors as a 6 a-side event. Although predominantly a winter game, there are an increasing number of leagues developing through the summer to give year round availability for players who wish to take part.

Taking part

Hockey cornerThere are currently 43 hockey clubs in the Kent. The vast majority of clubs cater for men and women and most have an active junior section playing competitive games and providing coaching at the weekends. All have access to all weather surfaces that are either shared facilities with Community Sports Centres or schools while many clubs have their own along with club house facilities.

The size of clubs varies from single sides to some of the larger clubs fielding as many as 12 teams on a Saturday so there is always a team to suit your ability and with a growing number of clubs fielding veterans teams this really is a game for life!

As well as competitive league structures at all levels there are also a number of social sides who play on Sundays, mid-week, at festivals and throughout the summer.

A comprehensive list of clubs can be accessed on the Kent Hockey website :

Structure of the sport

The sport is governed by England Hockey and overseen locally by county hockey and umpiring associations.

The league structure progresses from county based leagues through to regional status (Kent/Sussex) to Southern Area (for men) Eastern Area (for women) and culminating in National League divisions 1&2.
