Talented Athletes Case Study
Summary
Kent County Council is working with a number of organisations to support Kent sportsmen and women to compete at a national level in the run up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
What We Did
During 2010/11 over 1,000 Kent top sports performers, non disabled and disabled received a range of support. The sportsmen and women were selected across a range of sports. The ambitions of all the performers include selection for GB at future Olympic and Paralympic Games and International events.
The Kent FANS scheme provides national level sports people with free access at designated off peak times to a number of the County’s leisure and sports facilities for personal training and development.
Other benefits included:
- Sport science support
- Discounts on clothing and equipment
- Physiotherapy
- Sports massage therapy
- Osteopathy
- Chiropractic treatment
- Small Grants (if in fulltime education)
In addition to the support offered through the Kent FANS scheme, in 2010/11 twenty top performers were selected, following nomination by their National Governing Body to receive an enhanced level of support from Kent County Council including:
- Grant aid
- Support Workshops in partnership with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust and the 3 universities in Kent
- A year long sport science support programme in partnership with the three universities in Kent

- Support from Kent Districts and Leisure Trusts in delivery of the Kent FANS scheme
