The return of London 2012’s ‘Open Weekend’

Bangra DancersLast September, all over the UK, more than 750,000 people took part in the first ‘Open Weekend’ to launch the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Due to popular demand, the event will return in 2009 - it will be bigger and better, incorporating cultural, sporting and environmental initiatives.

This year’s Open Weekend will take place between 24-26 July 2009 and will be part of the celebrations to mark the three year countdown to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on 27th July 2012.

Last September, Kent staged a number of events to celebrate the launch of the national Cultural Olympiad, the four year cultural programme leading up to the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. This four year programme will celebrate Britain welcoming the world, the inspiration of young people, and the delivery of a positive legacy.

Kent’s events for the Launch Weekend in September 2008 included:

  • ‘Light Up Dover’ – creatively managed and produced by internationally renowned ‘The World Famous’, attracted an estimated 12,000 people to Dover Harbour to enjoy a groundbreaking fire show to celebrate the town’s rich history.
  • ‘Open Up Dover’ – following the ‘Light Up Dover’ event, a range of buildings and sites, not usually accessible, were ‘opened up’ to the public.
  • ‘Festival of Light’ in Gravesham – hundreds of school children, carrying lanterns and torches in a parade. The event was organised by North West Kent Racial Equality Council and Gravesham Borough Council.
  • Swale Borough Council arranged a range of storytelling events across the borough coupled with an outdoor screening of archive footage and artists films.
  • Young people from secondary schools and Pupil Referral Units across the county visited their local library to record their impressions of the Cultural Olympiad launch weekend directly onto the BBC Memoryshare Website.
  • Turner Contemporary organised a traditional Chinese dance family workshop to teach typical ribbon, fan and handkerchief dances with experienced Chinese dancers.

For more information on the Cultural Olympiad activities that took place in Kent over the 26-28 September 2008 please follow this link

Now is the time to save the date and start thinking of events that could help celebrate the Cultural Olympiad in your local community. More details will be announced very soon and will be available via the London 2012 website: www.london2012.com/culture

Design a coin for the 2012 Games!

young person at schoolFor your chance to be part of London 2012 and coinage history, create a design for a 50p coin based around Olympic and Paralympic Sports.

The competition, being run by the Royal Mint in partnership with London 2012, is open to all UK residents over the age of 13. A total of 27 designs will be chosen, depicting each of the sporting events at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Many of the coin designs will be based around both the Olympic and Paralympic discipline of the sport. For example if you wanted to design your coin around Basketball, it could encompass both the Olympic or Paralympic element.

As well as seeing your design on the back of millions of 50 pence pieces from March 2010, you will receive £1000 and a solid gold version of your winning coin.

You will also be invited to see your design transformed into actual United Kingdom coins at the Royal Mint!

Two of the 27 coins will be designed by children: the Athletics coin will be chosen from a special children's competition for 6-12 year olds; a coin for Cycling will be chosen from secondary school entries (13-19 year olds).
