Schools and Young People Sectoral Group
With the group’s five priorities identified and now out for consultation within the wider Kent Strategy for the 2012 Games, a successful brainstorming session was held in November between the Business & Enterprise Colleges Network , the Chairman of the Schools and Young People’s Group on the 2012 opportunities, and the Kent Manager for the 2012 Games.
It is hoped to repeat this activity with the remaining college networks. Outcomes included:
- Raised understanding, awareness and enthusiasm for the 2012 “opportunity”
- Raised understanding and awareness of the Kent approach, and where Kent schools can get involved
- Early exploration of how the 2012 agenda might be incorporated into the business & enterprise curriculum within Kent schools, for example Event Organisation, work-related learning, and as a cross curricular tool.
Learning Resource
London 2012 have available on their website a smallish range of learning resources that they will look to grow over the next five-and-a-bit years, and they are asking for our help!
Aimed at two age groups, 7 – 11 and 11 – 14, there are currently twenty Factsheets (ten aimed at each age group), with supporting images available from online photo albums themed along areas such as young people and sport, athletes, cultural events, and the Ancient Olympic Games.
London 2012 have then put together some suggested teaching plans around Olympic themes, with the intention that they are not meant to be prescriptive: but are simple hints and tips that have been written by teachers so that they are flexible enough to build into current teaching or develop further, as required. “They can be adapted for use with small groups, classes or in whole school settings. Ideas are also cross-curricular where possible and can be adapted to reflect different ways of learning. Links to other existing resources have been given within relevant teaching ideas”.
The Kent Coordinating Group for the 2012 Games’ Schools and Young People’s Group, chaired by Danny O’Donovan, is currently looking at these resources and considering what “Kent approach” might be added to maximise their impact on Kent children who of course are right on the doorstep of the Games. It is envisaged that this Kent approach will be launched at the start of the Autumn 2007 term.
