Inspiring young people

Everyone’s Games? National Conference: Wednesday 3 Dec 2008

Everyone involvedConfirmed speakers include: Tessa Jowell MP, Minister for the Olympics Charles Allen CBE, Chair of Nations and Regions Group, London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Jennie Price, Chief Executive, Sport England

In less than four years' time the UK will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Games are about more than elite sport, more than London and more than summer 2012. They are everyone's Games.

Local government and its partners will be critical in realising this vision and maximising participation in the many opportunities between now and the start of the Games in 2012.

These include:

  • the four-year Cultural Olympiad,
  • the domestic Education Programme,
  • inspiring people to volunteer,
  • take-up sport and
  • leading healthier and greener lives.

And of course the eyes of the world will be on the UK, presenting a huge opportunity for our tourism industry.

The LGA is undertaking a special programme of work to promote and support local government's role in spreading the benefits and legacy of the Games to all our communities.

This conference will explore how councils can work with partners to maximise participation in the run-up to 2012.
