SKILLS AND TRAINING - June 06 archive

Bio Students

The skills and training agenda, skills and training opportunities, created by London hosting the Games, are very much a national opportunity. Because of this, the South East Regional Olympic Coordinating Group, of which Kent is a member, has been awarded the national lead outside of London for delivering an approach to this agenda. A South East Olympic Skills Taskforce has therefore been created, which Kent is already “plugged” in to.

Locally, a range of partners have been identified to consider issues such as how best to upskill local workers, and how best to attract and support new entrants into fields such as construction, engineering, IT, hospitality, and project management, particularly those who might currently be considered as hard to reach. Working with local schools and organisations to support young people enter the world of work, and access a range of high quality vocational courses, may well be another consideration. Following confirmation of the chairmanship of this group, further detail on this agenda and developments against it within Kent will become available on this page.

Again, we are certainly not letting grass grow under our feet whilst that chairmanship is confirmed, and Kent's Campaign for the 2012 Games is delighted that partners within the campaign have been part of successful bids attracting for the region £1.9m of European Social Fund money with regards to sport-related skills training, and £2.9m of European Social Fund money with regards to construction-related skills training.
