Table Tennis on the Curriculum!
Over 100 children at St Mary’s CE primary school in Dover have been enjoying the delights of Table Tennis in addition to their normal classes.
Since September 2008 a Table Tennis club has been set up at the school and all pupils from years four, five and six have had the opportunity to participate. The Table Tennis equipment that has been purchased will last the school for years to come and allow hundreds of future students to enjoy the sport.
The St Mary’s CE primary school Table Tennis Club was part funded by Kent County Council’s Kent County Council’s Kent 2012 Campaign’s Small Grants Fund which is administered by the Sports, Leisure and Olympics Service.
With London 2012 Games on the horizon and Kent’s own Will Bayley competing in the Beijing Paralympics Table Tennis, the sport has never been more popular.
16 children now attend the weekly after-school club sessions and a further 30 during the curriculum time session at St Mary’s CE and in 2009 sessions will be offered to children from other local schools. St Mary’s CE primary school also hopes to compete against other schools and run some family Table Tennis sessions.
Funding remains to develop many more exciting initiatives like this. For further information on how to apply for the Small Grants Fund please contact Thomas.Marsh@kent.gov.uk
