The London Organising Committee recently made available details on what minimum requirements will be expected to host preparation camps for any of the Olympic or Paralympic Camps. Interested venues can consult these on www.london2012.com/en/gettinginvolved/trainingcamps/. Kent County Council’s Sports Development Unit has allocated half the time of a senior manager within the unit to co-ordinate and advise interested venues. Chris Metherell may be contacted on chris.metherell@kent.gov.uk. All submissions must be in by January 2007. A regional workshop on becoming a possible Pre Games Training Camp was held on 27 September at Surrey National Golf Club.
Discussion has taken place regarding the prospect of ensuring that the proposed Kent Youth Games for 2008 and 2010 has an Olympics theme and style.
Kent County Council is likely to allocate funding for sport through its `Towards 2010` document, which sets the political priorities for the next four years. Work has taken place to ensure that funding for sport will be linked to the 2012 Games as much as possible, such as in the development of school sport and the provision of funding for talented potential Paralympians.
The Kent Sports Development Unit is an agreed partner of the Grand National Archery Society for the Archery World Cup event in August 2007. Hosting this event at the Duke of York’s Barracks in Dover is likely to put the Barracks in a good position to accommodate either the GB squad or international teams as a Pre-Games Preparation Camp for 2012.
An event was held on 26 September to allocate further grants from the Kent Paralympics Fund to potential Paralympians, using resources from the Denne Charitable Trust.
Funds were secured from the Kent Business Awards at Leeds Castle to provide grants to potential 2012 participants and coaches.
The European Social Funding for volunteering work associated with 2012, which was to be spent between 2006 and 2008, has been withdrawn. This was a regional and national decision, in light of the LOCOG volunteering strategy not yet being produced.
