Bhangra Aerobics
Just
like aerobics but with bhangra music - heavy drum beat to get you moving
and bhangra folk dance moves to get you grooving!
Over the Summer Jugnu Bhangra Group put on a number of workshops where they provided a new concept of linking aerobics with Bhangra Dance to encourage people to take part in a new activity.
The Bhangra Aerobics was parted funded by Kent County Council’s Kent 2012 Campaign’s Small Grants Fund which is administered by the Sports, Leisure and Olympics Service.
The project proved highly popular with participants who took the classes in Gravesend in May of this year.
The project aimed to
- encourage young people to take part in physical activity and show leadership
- develop cultural harmony through dance
- be creative, active and enjoyable
- link arts and culture through sports
The Jugnu Bhangra Group has performed at many major national and international festivals including the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and the 1998 Football World Cup.
The group hopes to sustain and further develop these projects in the future and for further information on Bhangra Aerobics contact Surinder Dhinsa on surinderdhinsa@hotmail.com

Dover Rowing Club on the crest of a wave!
Dover
Rowing Club has put on a range of sessions for over 60 people
to develop their sport amongst the community, disability groups and
young people.
The club are using the sport as a means of promoting healthier lifestyles and strengthening links between schools, communities and clubs.
The project has included:
- School based programmes have been run during the year featuring Learn to Row sessions, capsize drills and Summer Scheme Camps throughout the school holiday.
- Adaptive Rowing sessions were arranged for people with disabilities and this aided to the success of the Kent Disability School Games.
- Weekly coached sessions contributed to the Dover Junior regatta in August and members of the club competed in various regattas’ throughout Southern England.
This project organised by Dover Rowing Club was made possible by part-funding from Kent County Council’s Kent 2012 Campaign’s Small Grants Fund which is administered by the Sports, Leisure and Olympics Service.
The impact Dover Rowing Club has had on the community can be seen by the fact that London 2012 hopeful Hannah Moon was asked to row ashore the Olympic Handover Flag on 24 August as part of Dover’s celebratory event to mark London being the next host of the Games.
Funding remains to develop many more exciting initiatives like this. For further information on how to apply for the Small Grants Fund please contact Thomas.Marsh@kent.gov.uk
Top Paralympians could be heading to Kent
Elite Paralympians wanting to train ahead of the 2012 Paralympic Games could be coming to Kent following news that eight of the county’s sports venues have been selected for the official brochure promoting facilities available to disabled athletes from across the world.
In March, Kent was recognised for having the most pre games training camps for Olympians in the country and the latest announcement is a significant achievement improving the county’s chances of welcoming top level sportspeople to the area.
The British Paralympic Association made its decision after a list of possible venues was submitted by Kent County Council as part of the Kent Campaign for the 2012 Games to generate long-term benefits to the county. Venues were assessed against many strict criteria including access, nearby accommodation and transport links to London.
The eight selected from Kent and Medway to help Paralympians train and which will be promoted to international teams at the Beijing Games are:
- Dartford Judo Centre (Judo)
- Sevenoaks School (Archery, Athletics, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Tennis)
- University of Kent, Canterbury (Archery, Boccia, 5-a-side, 7-a-side football, Goalball, Powerlifting, Table-tennis, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Basketball, Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby)
- Polo Farm Sports Club, Canterbury (Wheelchair Tennis)
- Canterbury High School (Athletics, Boccia, 5-a-side Football, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Tennis, Wheelchair Fencing)
- Stour Leisure Centre, Ashford (Boccia, 5-a-side Football, Goalball, Table Tennis, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby)
- Valley Leisure Centre, Folkestone (Boccia, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby)
- Medway Park (Athletics, Boccia, Goalball, judo, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby)
KCC Cabinet Member for Community Services Mike Hill said:
“This is excellent news and something very exciting for Kent that elite Paralympians and Olympians could be coming to our local facilities to train before competing at the London 2012 Games. International visiting athletes will help promote Kent to the world and bring economic benefit to the area. It really heightens our anticipation for the Olympics and Paralympics coming to the UK.”
