Lord Sebastian Coe to launch Kent’s Beacon work
Kent as a ‘Beacon Status Council’ will be hosting, The Olympic and Paralympic Games Legacy - a learning exchange event with beacon councils. Kent is hosting this event in partnership with the other four authorities awarded Beacon Status for 2012 work, as well as the Local Government Association and IdeA.
The event will be an opportunity to hear from the five councils awarded beacon status in recognition of their expertise and innovative approach in using the 2012 Games to create a legacy of delivering wider benefits for their communities. Kent, Dorset (with partners), Essex, Greenwich, and Hackney will share their learning with delegates with a strong emphasis on lessons and good practice that is of relevance to the whole country as part of our shared aim to spread the benefits from 2012 to as many communities as possible.
High profile speakers, including Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Ade Adepitan, member of the GB Paralympic Wheelchair Basektball team, will outline the progress made to date and highlight what further work is planned and needs to be undertaken, in order to create a lasting legacy.

Workshops: 15 July 2009
Thematic discussions during the workshops will share the Beacons’ innovative good practice. They will look at how learning can be applied to all councils however far from London and whether or not a local area has secured a venue or pre-games training camp. Workshop topics will include:
- Sport and physical activity
- Tourism and partnership working
- Employment, skills and volunteering
- Education and learning
- Culture and community involvement

- Mark Phillips, Head of Brand Marketing, London 2012 and Adidas.
