Who is your 2012 Hero?

Dame Kelly HolmesA parent taking future athletes to training, a builder making sure the Olympic Park is built on time or a volunteer welcoming overseas visitor’s to Britain – who is your 2012 hero?

BT has launched their ‘Road to 2012’ campaign, which celebrates everyday people who are making a special contribution to the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As the official communications partner for London 2012, the BT campaign aims to tell the story of the UK’s unsung heroes through portrait images, with the winner to be displayed in the National Portrait Gallery!

Does Kent have a Hero?

The campaign is not looking for artistic masterpieces - just real people who make a difference.

You can now nominate someone who you think deserves special recognition and if they win, individuals will have their picture taken by one of the world's top photographers and have their photo displayed alongside other famous faces at the National Portrait Gallery. The winner will also receive £5,000 to share with their nominee!

Double Olympic Gold winner Dame Kelly Holmes has nominated Chris Hespe, Head of Sport, Leisure and Olympics at Kent County Council, as her 2012 hero as part of the BT competition.

As Chairman of the Kent Campaign for the 2012 Games, Kent won Beacon status, graded ‘outstanding’, in 2009 for their work towards delivering a legacy from 2012.

Dame Kelly said, “Chris oversees the whole of the Olympic and Paralympic work in Kent, which includes sport but also several other sectors including arts, tourism, schools and young people, volunteering, business, economic development and transport.

“Chris was thinking about the benefits of the Olympic Games for Kent even before the UK bid won in 2005. He had anticipated that Kent would be in a good position to benefit from the Games, due to its location. He recognized early on that the Olympics were not just a sporting event but that there were potential benefits for a whole range of groups.
