All Dancing Dover ‘Step-Up’ to receive Inspire Mark!

Dance at Big Screen, DoverKent celebrated another of its 2012 inspired events on 29 August, as ‘All Dancing Dover’ took to the streets of its town centre.

The event concept was inspired by the recently installed London 2012/BBC Live Site in Dover’s market square. The event offered a unique experience, as the public were able to engage with the event through screen dance. For the first time, members of the public were able to follow famous dance routines, led by performers, and join in as the moves were projected on the live screen!

The interactive event aimed to encourage participation in dance from the community in a number of different ways, and at a level they feel comfortable at. Recognizing this and the event’s Olympic and Paralympic themes, ‘All Dancing Dover’ received the Inspire Mark from London 2012. The Inspire Mark is awarded to innovative and exceptional projects directly inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In fact, the day chosen to stage All Dancing Dover marked three years to go until the London Paralympics begin!

Dance ProjectAmong the great events held throughout the day, it was the Dover Play List that particularly engaged the public using the live site screen. Tracks with famous dance moves played every hour in the market square, including the ‘Macarena’ and the ‘YMCA’, inspiring impromptu dance routines by the public without any rehearsals!

Hidden dances all around Dover also took place to encourage mass participation in a variety of dance styles. The Dancing in the Streets theme included the Tango, Salsa, Jive and Ballroom Dance performances throughout the town centre, starting a routine and encouraging people watching to join in!

The event culminated in a fantastic ‘Step-Up’ street dance competition, held on a demolished bus station site! Street Dance groups from Kent showed off their moves in front of a packed marquee audience. Watch video on Kent TV
