Discovering Kent’s Hidden Gems in 2010!
Discovering Places will be launched in May 2010, providing you with the chance to discover the hidden cultural gems that exist right on your doorstep within Kent!
Discovering Places is one 10 ‘Major Projects’ that feature as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, a four year cultural festival leading up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, celebrating the diversity of Britain’s arts, culture and heritage.
Discovering Places is an exciting UK-wide programme that aims to provide young people in particular, the opportunity to discover explore and be inspired by the environment which surrounds them. This could be through historic and contemporary buildings, public spaces and natural places in and around the cities, towns and villages where they live and work.
Discovering Places will be delivered through a partnership led by Heritage Link, CABE (the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) and Natural England, aiming to contribute to the Cultural Olympiad’s ambition to leave a legacy of stronger communities and encourage more sustainable, healthier and active lifestyles.
The programme will launch on May Bank Holiday weekend 2010 (1-3 May) and will be themed the ‘Natural Environment on People’s Doorsteps’ and will look to highlight the easy access to wonderful open spaces available to local people. Events will range from open days, participation and performance events and touring exhibitions held across the country.
It is hoped that by spring 2012, Discovering Places will also form a key part of the UK Olympic Torch Relay, aiming to ‘shine a light’ on the UK's hidden places and spaces! A leaflet and online guide will be produced for each of the 76 days of the Torch Relay, explaining the range of places to visit from the natural, historic and contemporary built environments that will surround the Torch as it travels around the UK
