Inspiring young people through the Games

Olympic Values Relay Launched in Kent!

Olympic Values Relay LaunchedOn Tuesday 3 November, 14 lucky Year 7 students from Cornwallis Academy in Maidstone will help to launch the official ‘ Pass it On' Values Relay.

A synchronized balloon launch across the UK will mark the start of the project which uses the Olympic and Paralympic values to inspire learning. Buckmore Park Kart Circuit will provide the unique venue for Kent's launch, where pupils from the academy will help simultaneously release a ‘values' balloon at 4.30pm, along with all 9 other Government regions.

The relay will also mark 1000 days until the start of the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympic Games. Other venues involved include: Wembley Stadium, Leicester Tigers Rugby Club, Manchester City FC, and Sussex county Cricket Club.

‘Pass It On' is a specific project launched by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), aiming use the Olympic and Paralympic values to inspire learning. The project has received the Inspire Mark from London 2012 and forms a major part of Playing for Success ( PfS ) – the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games National Legacy Programme.

The ‘Pass it On' project includes a poetry competition for young people and the development of an online sharing network of ideas and good practice for schools to use, all linked to the Olympic and Paralympic values.

Throughout each region, a relay of resources will take place, each resource or ‘baton' representing an Olympics and Paralympics Value. Each center involved will be able to upload any work completed as part of the values relay to the Get Set website , to gain the individual centre and student recognition from London 2012. Over the three years in the run up to the Games the re will be nine values for nine regions over nine terms.

BT is supporting the project and will provide volunteers for events, attending as ‘Values Champions' as part of BT's 2012 volunteer week.
