Kent’s Campaign for the 2012 Torch
Kent County Council and its partners within the Kent Campaign for the 2012 Games have been seeking to ensure that Dover is the welcome point for the Olympic Torch when it first reaches the UK's shores in 2012.
KCC staged a ‘Visioning Event’ in March 2009 to scope how the Torch could potentially arrive in Dover in 2012. A range of partners attended including politicians, artists and school children. Working together they explored a variety of options for the Torch’s arrival including a flotilla of historic craft, a robotic whale and a jet-pack man to name but a few.
The Kent Campaign for the 2012 Torch has had to refocus its efforts following the announcement from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that there will no longer be an International Torch Relay. Kent will continue preparing the case that when the Torch travels directly into the UK, from Athens, it should arrive in Dover in front of the iconic white cliffs.
