Beacons delivering a Sporting Legacy from the Games
On 17 November 2009 Kent County Council coordinated a Beacon Open Day on how local authorities across the UK could deliver a sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over 200 delegates were present for an excellent day entitled ‘Action not words! Ensuring a sporting legacy from 2012’.
The event formed part of the National Sports Development Seminar organised by the Institute of Sports, Parks and Leisure (ISPAL) and was held at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield.
The five Beacon authorities (Kent, Dorset and Essex, and the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Hackney) were joined by Sheffield and Middlesbrough Councils to deliver workshops around the key sporting themes:
- Competitive School Sport
- Supporting Talented Athletes
- Specialist Sports Facilities
- Partnerships with Health
The workshops provided delegates with an ideal opportunity to hear from the five councils awarded Beacon status in recognition of their expertise and innovative approach in using the 2012 Games to create a legacy of delivering wider benefits for their communities.
High profile speakers included Lord Moynihan, Chair of the British Olympic Association, and Danny Crates, Paralympic Gold medallist, who outlined the importance of local government’s role in delivering a sporting legacy from the Games.
All presentations from the Beacon Sports Open Day can be found on the Olympic and Paralympic Communities of Practice
Managed by the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA), the Beacon award celebrates excellence and innovation in local government.
