Kent Welcomes the Olympic Torch

White Group - Feedback from Visioning Event

How White working group

  • Projection of imagery and information on the White Cliffs.
  • The Olympic flame could light up (think ‘back to the future’) the coast, the cliffs and on to the castle that could have it’s keep as a giant Olympic flame / beacon signifying the arrival of the flame in the UK. Castle – becomes Olympic Flame.
  • Abseil down cliff?
  • The white cliffs surely must be a backdrop.
  • Perhaps things could unfurl on or over the cliffs.
  • Red arrows
  • White cliffs have historically been seen as a barrier or defence, now they can welcome the world.
  • Why shouldn’t the arrival of the flame in the U be as grand an event as the lighting of the torch at the Opening Ceremonies. The vista / stage at Dover is enormous and it means so much for the UK.
  • A visual link to Europe and the rest of the world would be great – perhaps a laser or other effect.
  • Perhaps people or machinery could walk over water to Dover from the continent. It is possible and the Navy / Army / Military have techniques. We could even stage an engineering competition around the feat. Walk / Dance / move on water to. The water is a huge canvas, why not use it. People could run across the channel too.
  • Why not build a bridge between Calais and Dover?
  • Lines of fire over the Channel.
  • Amphibious vehicles or things could appear out of the water.
  • Increasing scale – so it is seen above! People want to see something giant, the bigger it is – the more people can see it.
  • We must be environmentally safe.
  • Bring cliffs to life – coloured explosion.
  • Olympic Rings on cliff.
  • Tone: Visionary – ‘Hope’, Welcoming – ‘hello’
  • Particpatory – everyone should be involved be it in the event(s) or contributing towards the activity.
  • ‘Nice cup of tea: English welcome’
  • Bands on water
  • Inclusivity; disabled, all communities / individuals: Disabled (and any other) people should not be sinlged out when talking about inclusivity – but considered and treated just as anyone else.
  • OLYMPIC PILGRIMAGE – Dover was a site for pilgrimage, the Olympics are moving to the UK on its own pilgrimage.
  • Express ‘Kentishness’ somehow.
  • Breakwater amphitheatre – this harbour is a natural amphitheatre and could be used as a great theatre / space for a spectacle (like Dubai!!).
  • Kent horse? Showing off.
  • Pharos. Roman torch (light houses) – Dover has beacons as part of the permanent architecture – why not use them?

White working groupWhere

  • Dover castle
  • Breden Stone
  • Western Heights
  • Shakespeare Beach – which does appear somewhere in some of Shakespear’s text.

How?

  • Medieval torch
  • Terry Thomas film – Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines
  • Bring people together – with collaboration there will be greater advocacy and a more united approach.
  • Travel through the ages – Dover has been the scene for amazing transportation feats and attempts.
  • A festival or series of events and activitites will likely be more useful, inclusive, effective, and probably more attractive to LOCOG than a one-off event.
  • Anything we do should be contemporary and relevant.

Creative

  • Most of this covered above.
  • Potential strapline: “Unite – Ignite.”
  • People lining the route

Legacy

  • I remember: 1948 crowds – when the torach arrived last time, it was the greatest gather we’d seen and a peaceful, positive one so soon after the war. With the problems the country and world face today, the arrival in Dover in 2012 would be a similar start / milestone to a more positive outlook.
  • Local people take pride (tradition/heritage)
  • Navy – port was Royal Navy
  • People were part of it.
  • Be able to see a better Dover – regeneration
  • Memory: seeing a spectacle in Dover – not just London
  • Unity between Calais and Dover – or more appropriately the UK and the rest of the World.
  • Proud to be part of it
  • Engaging young people – showcase them.
  • I live here – I would like to see it regenerated. Pride in the street. Clean it up. Changing peoples attitudes to where they live.
  • White working groupProud of Dover/region. Once in a lifetime opportunity to benefit. Renewed sense of community
  • The activity should be free to attend.
  • Dover great in past – will be great in future. People in Dover very proud.
  • Scenery: unmatched. Natural beauty. Encourage investment.
  • DOVER PRIDE!
  • Space created (venue) for youth in Dover. The arrival of the flame in Dover would act as a stimulus to regeneration projects. In particular catering for the young people of Dover, tying in to LOCOG’s own vision, promises and aspirations.
  • Important that Dover becomes a destination again, much of our heritage has been forgotten, but is very much still here.
  • People do not just pass through, they should remember the arrival of the torch and spend time here as a result.
  • Create an attraction – to act as a catalyst for additional tourism.
  • Cable car is proposed – huge legacy potential.
  • Yachting marina thriving – need to publicise other sites than the Castle, there really is a lot going on in Dover. The Painted Roman house being just one other example. Need to generate thinking and reactions such as: ‘I never knew that this was in Dover’
  • Creating / commission art installations as a permanent legacy to this temporary festival / artistic endeavour.
  • Multi-site festival could support the activity and host various parts of the subsequent torch relay.
  • Confidence increase. We can we extend confidence to people of Dover.
  • English Heritage – exposure for the building and sites so often overlooked.

Participation Pledge and Engagement

  • My Olympic medal – memory, we can’t compete as athletes, but this is my moment. I am art of it all - by being there
  • How many people will be coming?
  • T shirts – schools – unifying through badges and other collateral.
  • Relay – with and supported by school children
  • Comes from water – wave effect – continuing through the area – like a Tsunami – but in a good way!
  • This is where the fire starts – it has arrived in the UK, now lets light up the whole country.
  • Annual sporting event in Dover could be stimulated by this activity.
