Disability Netball

What's it all about?

Netball challengeEngland Netball is committed to providing opportunities for people with disabilities and has created a range of modified rules to meet different abilities. Adapted rules include wheelchair netball rules and modifications for people with learning disability.

Netball has defensive, attacking and centre court positions, all have different characteristics which means that players with varying disabilities can take part together. Non disabled players can also take part but have to be in a wheelchair.

A player with good mobility can take a centre court role, which covers a large area, whilst someone with limited mobility can demonstrate specialised skills in attacking or defending.

In addition, EN focuses on awareness training for coaches, umpires and volunteers, to ensure that people with disabilities may enjoy the highest quality experiences through the game of netball. EN offer courses designed to suit the specific needs of coaches, disability professionals and others who want to help disabled people play netball.

Taking Part

To play netball a team needs to consist of 7 players and 5 substitutes. The rules are the same as netball; however the following rules are specific to wheelchair netball:

  • You have 4 seconds to pass the ball
  • You can bounce the ball once to gain possession
  • You can hold the ball in your lap when turning or stopping in a chair
  • When you have the ball, you can not travel more than one and a half turns of your wheels.
  • A team can have unlimited substitutions at any point during the game.
