Lewis, Yolanda and Helshan Sweden Bound
Three
teenagers who train at Angley School, Cranbrook, Lewis Gray, Yolanda King
and Helshan Weerasinghe, have all been selected to represent England in
the Safir International Tournament in Orebro, Sweden from 26th –
28th February.
This major competition, with entries from all over Europe, is likely
to give the England selectors an early indication of who is on form and
in serious contention for a place at the European Youth Championships
in the summer.
Lewis Gray, 16, from Benenden, who is both a pupil and a member of the
Weald Club based at Angley School, is the only one of the three to have
gone to the European Youth Championships last year, but he played in the
cadets (under 15) and now he has gone up an age category to juniors (under
18) where the fight for a place will be much stronger. He is the current
England no.4 junior.
Yolanda King, 15, the current England junior girl no.4 and national champion,
will be keen to impress in Sweden. Last year the St Bede’s School,
Hailsham pupil and Weald TT Club member was overlooked for the European
Championships, several players ranked below her being favoured above her.
Judd School, Tonbridge pupil, Helshan Weerasinghe, only 13, will be eligible
for selection for the European Youth Championships for the first time.
England cadet ranked no.5, he is a member of the SE Performance Centre
also based at Angley School, training alongside Gray and King.
