Kent Special School named as a national trail blazer!

Playing New Age KurlingValence School, Westerham has been named as one of 50 schools nationally to lead on the ‘Project Ability’ programme. Valence Sports College undertook a thorough application process to be selected successfully as a Project Ability lead.

Jo Eames, Director of Sport, Valence School said “We are absolutely delighted to be selected to lead on the Project Ability work in Kent and to be helping drive the ambitions of the Kent School Games, support the School Games Organisers in Kent and the schools they work with across the County.”

The Project Ability programme will support the increase of opportunities to improve and extend provision for young disabled pupils to take part in competitive sport across Kent.

In practical terms this will be achieved in a number of ways including, a national network of 50 lead schools (for Kent this will be Valence School) who have established expertise in engaging young disabled people.

  • Innovation with national governing bodies to establish inclusive / specific impairment formats.
  • Training for all SGOs in disability awareness, planning and delivery of inclusive competition at Level 2 of the School Games.
  • Equipping all schools to increase participation for young disabled people. This will be achieved by supporting delivery of Level 1 of the School Games.
  • Inclusion of disability events within Level 3 of the School Games (Kent School Games Finals).
  • Aspirational Paralympic events within the Level 4 national competition.

Disabled ArcherValence School will be supported in delivering the Project Ability programme by Mike Bishop, Kent Disability Sport Manager, and the Kent Disability Sport Advisory group.
