Sport Makers underway in Kent
The first Sport Makers convention took place at Canterbury Christ Church University on Tuesday 22 November. Hosted at the Christ Church Sports Centre the 40 attendees all received an inspirational workshop covering the Olympic and Paralympic Values, Leading From Within, Having Fun and Keeping Safe, and Helping Others.
After a visit to the 'deployment depot' which included various ideas, support and attendance from National Governing Bodies and promotional materials from other organisations in how they might be able to organise and support sport in the community, the Sport Makers were asked to fill in a pledge card stating their intentions in how they might complete a minimum of 10 hours. Once this target is reached they are automatically entered into a draw to win Olympic tickets. Further support and guidance will be given to keep Sport Makers engaged beyond this initial 10 hour period.
All attendees were also given Adidas polo shirts and shoe bags to help them with their activities.
A further workshop ran at the University of Kent on Sunday 27 November with another 20 attendees. After this other workshops and conventions will move across the County, starting with Sittingbourne Community College on Thursday 19 January 2012 and Sheppey Healthy Living Centre on Tuesday 31 January 2012. Sport Makers have to be aged 16 and over and Kent Sport is helping to recruit, train and support almost 1,300 across the County.
