What is Sport Makers?
Sport Makers forms part of Places People Play, the £135 million mass participation legacy plans unveiled by the Government in November 2010. Sport Makers will capture the excitement of sport and London 2012 to recruit, train and deploy sports volunteers to organise and lead community sporting activities.
The National Target
Nationally, Sport Makers aims to get 40,000 people aged 16 years and over to organise and lead community sporting activities across the country.
Sport Makers in Kent
We have been tasked to recruit, train and deploy over 1,200 volunteers between now and September 2013. These volunteers will attend a workshop and then be deployed into community placements where they must complete at least 10 hours of volunteering working with those also aged 16 and over. It is hoped that over 600 of these will be retained and commit to further volunteering beyond the initial 10 hours. Sport England is working on a rewards package but at present we have had confirmation that all volunteers will receive an adidas polo shirt and shoe bag. Workshops are due to commence in October/November 2011.
Who can apply?
- national governing bodies of sport
- local authorities
- sports clubs
- leisure trusts
- youth clubs
- schools / colleges / universities
- other organisations/workplaces able to provide volunteers/placements
