Kent Table Tennis Players in Portuguese Championships
Weald TT Club, Cranbrook pair, Lewis Gray and Yolanda King, and Tonbridge pupil Helshan Weerasinghe represented England in the Portuguese Youth Championships in Tavira recently.
Lewis, who is currently based at the Grantham Academy, produced his best form while representing England in the Portuguese Youth Championships in Tavira last week, reaching the quarter finals of the junior boys' (under 18s) singles.
England Junior Coach Nick Jarvis was impressed with his performance: “Lewis was playing his best Table Tennis… ever probably. Playing the right game and showing he’s competitive at this standard".
Weald Club colleague Yolanda King, 17, also training at Grantham, represented England junior girls.
Judd School, Tonbridge pupil Helshan Weerasinghe, now also a Tonbridge resident, had a good tournament, reaching the quarter-finals of the cadet (under 15) boys' singles.
Jarvis was pleased with all the England players: “Overall we looked competitive against all the different countries. We lost a lot of close matches, which 12 months ago we were losing easily. The type of game we are playing suggests that the more we practice, the better we will get. All the squad are playing the right way and believing in themselves, which we are doing a lot more.”
Gray, King and Weerasinghe went straight on to an England youth training camp at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield. Helshan has also been selected to represent England Schools in the International School Sport Federation World Schools’ Championships in Sardinia.
