The Margate Masters Beach Tournament - Saturday
27 and Sunday 28 June
Margate
will be one of just five locations in the UK playing host to national
Volleyball, when the sport's top level of competition returns to the
town on the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June.
The Margate Masters Beach Tournament will take place on the town’s
Main Sands and kicks of the Volleyball England Beach Tour Open for
summer 2009.
Last year’s event has been described by Volleyball England as the
best Beach Tour Open ever held and this year, they are concentrating
on fewer events around the country, with Margate the only venue in
the south east.
Play takes place on both days from 9am to 5pm, with the finals starting
at 2pm on Sunday 28 June. Men’s and ladies’ pairs will be in action
on international standard courts, competing for ranking points and
the event title. There will also be a local standard knockout tournament
on the Sunday and activities for all the family.
The weekend will kick off with a local secondary schools tournament
on Friday 26th June with approximately 100 school children receiving
expert coaching and competing in the Thanet Schools trophy.
Sports Development Officer, Martyn Cassell, said: “We’re delighted
to be welcoming back national Beach Volleyball and this year, it’s
bigger and better than ever. The compliments we’ve received from Volleyball
England about last year’s event just highlight the quality of Margate
Main Sands as a venue for Beach Volleyball. It’s no wonder we’ve been
selected to host the top level of competition in the sport, especially
as we’re also on the list of potential pre-Olympic training camps
for Beach Volleyball for the 2012 London Olympics.”
