Leadership In Running Fitness (LIRF) course
The one day 'Leadership in Running Fitness' course is designed to equip new leaders with the knowledge and skill required to lead mixed ability groups of walkers, joggers and runners.
The course is divided into theory and practical sessions and gives plenty of information on leading groups. The day will include classroom based presentations and interactive group exercises as well as practical sessions which look at leading beginners and mixed ability groups. The following topics are covered:
- Barriers to participation
- Planning
- Warm up and cool down
- Session management
- Stretching and mobility
- Delivering a session to mixed ability groups
- Fitness Factors
- Goal Setting
- Common injuries
- Footwear – the basics
- Role of a leader
On completion of the course and subject to confirmation of a UK Athletics CRB disclosure, England Athletics will issue you with a coaching license. Please note that attendance at a Leadership in Running Fitness course is required for all potential Kent Group Leaders as the coaching license provides you with your UK Athletics insurance.

* For those Leaders who sign up, for free, to the Kent Running Project (aka RunKent), they will receive a 50% refund of the cost of the LiRF course plus ongoing support from the Kent Running Activator, a centralised marketing package, free leader development sessions, free handouts, promotional cards and a first aid bum bag. To qualify for this refund and the other benefits, all we ask is that you establish at least one running group in Kent within three months of completion of the course, continue leading the group for a minimum of three months and register your group and your runners on the RunEngland website.In doing so, we will be able to determine the on-going success of the Kent Running Project.
