Sport Unlimited (SU) is part of the ‘5 hour offer’ and one of the programmes that emerged from the additional £100m, announced by Government in July 2007, aimed at giving every young person aged 5-16 years the chance to do five hours of sport per week and 16-19 years, three hours of sport per week.

The aim of the Sport Unlimited programme is to offer an additional 1-2 hours of regular sport beyond the curriculum for ‘semi-sporty’ young people delivered through a range of out of school, community and club providers. It also aims to increase the number of young people directed to clubs, reducing post 16 drop off. ‘Semi sporty’ participants are defined as young people aged 5-16 currently participating in three hours PE and sport per week or 16-19 year olds doing 1-2 hours per week.

Young people on Athletics track£406,500 is available for Sport Unlimited projects in Kent for 2010/11. In short, a Sport Unlimited project is a block of 8 to 10 sessions, that has a clear exit route for participants to move on to at the end. Each young person must be encouraged toattend at least 5 out of the 8 or 6 out of the 10 sessions. Kent has a target of 28,710 young people to be retained in Sport Unlimited programmes between April 2008 and March 2011.

For April 2010 – March 2011, the funding is all being allocated via District and Governing Body led plans. The closing date for the submission of these plans is the 8 January 2010. The lead officer for District plans varies across Districts. For more information about the allocation of this funding, please contact andrea.murphy@kent.gov.uk.
