Overview

Oyster Indoor Bowls Club is situated in the picturesque town of Whitstable very close to the vibrant working harbour. It offers excellent all year round bowling facilities and their 8 rinks offer members the opportunity to play bowls regardless of age and experience. Oyster were offered a grant in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and we asked the club to share their experience of obtaining emergency funding in their own words so others can learn from it.

Eligibility

The club were offered a grant in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak following the government announcement that there would be support for small businesses based on their rateable value.

What to Apply For?

“We received a letter from our local council (in this case Canterbury City Council) with an application form for the grant. We had also read about this grant in a recent letter from the BDA (Bowls Development Alliance). We found out what our rateable value was and applied for a fixed sum based on this value, as outlined by the council. Organisations with a property rateable value of £15,000 or below are eligible for a cash grant of £10,000 whilst a property rateable value over £15,000 and less than £51,000 is eligible for a grant of £25,000.”

The Process

“The application process was extremely easy. The funds were in our bank account within 3 days.”

Impact

“The funding will cover our losses while the club remains closed. We have put our yearly subscriptions on hold so it will ensure the survival of the club during this challenging time.”
